Environmental Manager
SIPEF is devoted to certified sustainable production of tropical agricultural commodities, primarily palm oil. It also produces certified sustainable bananas, rubber and tea. These labor-intensive activities are developed in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Ivory Coast. In all of its activities, SIPEF continually strives to achieve a balance between taking care of the environment and social welfare, and development at an economic level.
SIPEF’s Responsible Plantation Policy expresses our commitment to no deforestation and no new planting on peat. This commitment extends to our direct suppliers, ie/smallholders, with whom we work to achieve certification. In order to ensure operations in Indonesia working consistent our environmental commitments we are currently searching for an Environmental Manager. The Environmental Manager will be working for PT Tolan Tiga and based in Medan, with a direct report to the Senior Manager Sustainability and Regional Director Sustainaiblity.
Roles and responsibilities
The purpose of the Environmental Manager will be to focus on the successful delivery of environmental management planning and operations consistent with SIPEF”s Responsible Plantation Policy and our no deforestation and no new planting on peat commitments in particular. The SE Officer will develop and guide the implementation and monitoring of habitat management plans for all HCV/HCS areas within our concessions. The Environmental Manager will be required to manage the processes for new developments and remediation and compensation procedures as per the RSPO requirements. The Environmental Manager will lead ongoing satellite imagery monitoring for incidences of fires and deforestation for our external stakeholders including partner NGOs, ESG ratings agencies and others. The position will require close collaboration with other functional groups within the Sustainability Department, ie/ESG, communications, and will report directly to the Senior Manager and Regional Director of Sustainability.
Other duties will include:
Collect, verify and monitor all GIS data relevant to environmental management
Field assessments to assess High Conservation Values, threats and mitigation strategies within our concessions
Provide relevant training and support to field teams to implement management and monitoring
Help inform group performance against policies, and guidelines related to all aspects of ESG and sustainability
Engages with internal stakeholders and presents regular sustainability reports and conducts sustainability assessments
Acting as the day-to-day subject matter expert and supporting the business divisions to embed sustainability within our business
Help develop ESG strategy that is achievable, evidence-based, and data-led.
Skills
Strong affinity and interest in natural history and conservation a must
Broad understanding of strategic environmental and compliance planning in relation to driving environmental improvements across operational and corporate function type environments
Demonstrable experience in GIS, including utilization of multispectral remote sensing data
Organized, inquisitive and detail-orientated with strong technical and communication skills
Strong attention to detail and ability to understand and resolve data errors easily
Professional, committed and driven to succeed in their role and deliver to a high standard
Skills and Experience:
Experience in the following standards is ad
At least 5 years’ relevant experience, with emphasis on GIS, preferably in the oil palm industry
Advanced user in ArcGIS, QGIS, Erdas Imagine or comparable
RSPO requirements (ie/ New Planting Procedure, Remediation and Compensation Procedure)
HCV/HCS identification and management (HCV/HCS ALS training a plus)
Land Use Change Analysis
ISO14064 and/or ISO14001 accreditation desirable
